FEAR OF CHICANO COMICS:
LOS BROS HERNANDEZ, MAESTROS OF THE ANTI-CANON

As part of Dr. Gabriel Gutiérrez' "Chicanos and the Media" course at California State University, Northridge, during the Spring 2006 semester, I produced an hour-long radio program on the comic book work of brothers Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez for broadcast on 90.7 FM, KPFK Los Angeles.

The program, "FEAR OF CHICANO COMICS: LOS BROS HERNANDEZ, MAESTROS OF THE ANTI-CANON", discusses the impact and significance of the Hernandez brothers' Love & Rockets comic book series within the context of comics and alternative comix history. "FEAR OF CHICANO COMICS" covers the brothers' work as it relates to issues of Chicana/o identity, gender and sexuality identity and relations, marginalization within dominant U.S. society, resistant cultural and educational production and practice, connections between Chicano culture and punk culture, and geopolitical connections between Southern California Chicano punk life and Latin/Central American life through the end of the Cold War and beyond.

The program also confronts and challenges the exclusion of the Hernandez brothers' work from the recent "Masters of American Comics" exhibit at the MOCA and Hammer museums in Los Angeles (a show which comprised the work of 15 white male comics artists and no one else).

The program includes interviews with Jaime Hernandez, Dr. Charles Hatfield, Brian Tucker, Amy Gerstler, Harry Gamboa, Jr., Charles Hauther, Joy (last name withheld), and Sandra de la Loza, and features the music of the Chicano punk band, The Brat (Teresa Covarrubias and Rudy Medina).
